A San Francisco 49ers fan is in a coma after he appeared to have been assaulted outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, following last weekend’s NFC Championship Game between the 49ers and Los Angeles Rams.
According to Harriet Ryan of the Los Angeles Times, police said Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics found Oakland restaurant owner Daniel Luna on the ground in a parking lot outside SoFi Stadium.
The 40-year-old Luna was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he remains in a medically induced coma.
Inglewood Police Lt. Geoffrey Meeks said the belief is that Luna “suffered from an assault at the stadium to his upper body and facial area.”
Per Ryan, Luna’s friend Vernon Hill said Luna flew to Los Angeles by himself for the NFC Championship Game after other people who were supposed to go with him canceled their plans.
A large portion of the more than 70,000 fans in attendance at the NFC Championship Game were 49ers fans, and they watched San Francisco lead for much of the day before falling 20-17.
The 49ers released a statement to CBS LA regarding the alleged attack on Luna, saying:
“What happened to Daniel Luna is reprehensible, and we strongly condemn all violence. We know local authorities are conducting a full investigation and we’re here to support them however we can. Our thoughts and prayers go to Mr. Luna, his family, friends, and the medical team providing him care.”
According to ProFootballTalk’s Michael David Smith, police said they currently have no suspects but are reviewing security camera footage from around SoFi Stadium.
