Following the legal resolution back in April last year, we now have some more Macross movies coming out in theaters this June.
While we already had the Macross Plus Movie Edition released in theaters last October, these new Macross Frontier movie releases are a bit different.
Firstly, Macross Frontier was never given an official international release outside of Japan. This includes the original 2007 TV series and the subsequent movies that were released in 2009 and 2011.
Secondly, Macross Frontier was a massive hit in Japan upon its release, and many fans thought it brought back much of the original magic that made the first Macross series so special.
Dealing with the 55th Long Distance Colony Fleet looking for a new star system to call home, they come across a uniquely dangerous alien species called the Vajra. However, as with all things Macross, these aliens aren’t quite as mysterious as they first appear.
Macross Frontier also retained the famous love triangle setup between the main pilot Alto and two idol singers, Sheryl and Ranka.
The series also continued the hybrid CG approach seen in the entirely excellent Macross Zero. With characters being handled with traditional 2D animation and the mecha done in 3D CG.
The first movie, The False Songstress, was meant as a summary of the story from the TV series, but with some additional footage. Whereas the second movie, The Wings of Farewell, continued the story from the first movie and concluded the overall Macross Frontier narrative arc.
While the Japanese Blu-ray releases of the movies featured English subtitles, these new theatrical releases are the first time we have had the movies made officially available outside of Japan.
Macross Frontier: The False Songstress and Macross Frontier: The Wings of Farewell will be released in select theaters courtesy of Fathom Events on June 16 and June 30 respectively.
